exploring my heritage through music

My recent work explores the intersection of Korean traditional and Western contemporary music, collaborating with composers and performers from both traditions to create entirely new sound worlds. I have commissioned over a dozen works for clarinet combined with Korean traditional instruments, working with composers—both Korean and Western—to uncover innovative textures, techniques, and sonic possibilities. Beyond performing folk melodies on Western instruments or applying abstract Western compositional techniques, I aim for a genuine artistic fusion that engages performers and audiences in the creative process. This includes reimagining traditional Korean melodies, presenting new works by Korean traditional composers, and interpreting pieces by Western composers writing for this hybrid medium. In my approach, fusion is not an end in itself; it is a means to expand the boundaries of expression, producing music that feels both entirely new and entirely natural.
